OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
TOP END - Page 13

8 August 2007, Wednesday

Today it was 4WD track down towards the South Entrance of the Park. Sandy Creek and Surprise Creek Falls on the way and
a couple of water crossings. The Tolmer River was first, but wait - we entered the 4WD track and saw an old Jeep Cherokee
(XJ) unpacking and the people (from Victoria) did not look very happy and did not reply our greeting - hmmmm why that? We
came to the crossing and an old Landrover Discovery was waiting to cross,  he wanted to walk the crossing first because the
Jeep was actually drowning in the river... hmmm the indicator showed 0.6 m but the Jeep driver said it was more 1 m deep.
Well I guess he tried to cross in 3rd gear high range and full speed. I just had a quick look and drove through to stop the man
going into the croc infested river. We made it through easily and I came back to show him the water depth which was 0.7 m
as we found out later that day during a Ranger talk. He decided that his air intake was too low and went back to the bitumen.
We went onwards and came first to the Sandy Creek area - a 1.7 km walk to the falls and nobody here !!! Finally we found a
place which looked almost like in 1991. The walk was quite easy and we came to a nice waterfall with a plunge pool. I could
not wait and got into the water - nice clear water and good for snorkeling. When we packed up the crowed moved in, about
ten people came across us when we went back, good timing! On we went to Surprise Creek and had four more river
crossing. Three of them little pools and the Reynolds River which was about 0.5 m deep at the time. We took the chicken
track on the way to Surprise Creek and the straight way through it on the way back - both quite easy. At the end, it was a nice
day and we went home to start packing for an early start tomorrow. After Dinner we joined a talk from the Ranger about
Litchfield and that was quite interesting. We will have more guided tours, talks and slide shows when we get to Kakadu. Here
are the pics to proof.
The start to go back and talk to the Landrover guy
again. This side has a croc sign - the other one does
not - I guess that is why the guy wanted to walk it first to
see how deep it is - idiot and he was not German...
The bottom is full of little rocks - makes it easier for the
tourists....
Coming back - the vehicle shortly afterwards was having a little hick-up from the
water but no problems and I was too lazy to put the "bra" on for only 0.7 m. The
car was not wet inside - good !!! See ya -= Landrover and Cherokee - he he he - it
does have some advantage to lift the vehicle and have a snorkel - by the way
the water did get up to the air filter - because the grooves in the housing where
still wet when we came back to the campsite in the afternoon.
Sandy Creek Falls - Tjaynera Falls as they
are called today. See, me in front of the
Falls - as usual you just have to stand
under the falls to get the right feeling.
Nice fishes - unfortunately, we have no
fishing gear with us. Below the panoramic
picture of the plunge pool.
Lots of those little lizards around - which also means
snakes - but this time we did not see any.
Great looking lizard - black and white half of the body
and red/orange back and tail.
