Continuation of the trip towards Windjana Gorge...
5 September 2007, Wednesday
Today we went on a day trip to Tunnel Creek and afterwards explored the Windjana Gorge. The road to Tunnel Creek is even
rougher than the first bit to Windjana Gorge. Tunnel Creek is a cave which is about 750 m long which the river has formed
through the limestone reef. You need to walk through water holes and be aware that bats and flying foxes inhabit the cave.
Freshwater crocs could also be in the water, but I did not see any. Due to the bats anf flying foxes, I was left alone for walking
and Mary stayed at the car. The walk through Tunnel Creek is one of the main attractions of the Gibb River Road adventure
and should not be missed. Nice cave formations, cool water pools and just the walking through a tunnel like structure with
huge cave rooms is worthwhile the trip. After walking back again and getting Mary for some pictures at the entrance, we
headed back to Windjana Gorge for a walk through the Gorge. The walk is very nice and soon you start to see a couple of
freshwater crocs - finally, we see them in the wild. Standing there for pictures and being really quite to make sure they do not
go and dive off soon would be considered stupid. Just another 20 meters along the walk about 30 crocs were sunbathing on
the bank of the river together with hundreds of corellas. And more crocs will be coming along the way, you can even get
quite close to them before they move away. Great !!! At the end, I took a few sunset pictures again before retreating to the
trailer. Pictures from the day below. By the way, I am not trying to explain the story about an Aboriginal hiding in Tunnel
Creek before being killed close to the entrance 3 years later. The story is very interesting but too long to be explained here -
go and get it from the net or better visit the place !!!

Lennard River Bridge from the Kiosk.

The Kiosk at the Lennard River, strange place and person running it, however fresh drinks and ice-cream available.
|
Camping in front of Windjana Gorge, nice setting but too expensive for what it is,
|
Sunset glowing of the 350 Mill. year old limestone reef.
|
Nice Boab trees along the way to Tunnel Creek - they are fantastic looking trees - sorry said that before...
|
The entrance to Tunnel Creek on the left - no wonder that the police could not find it for about three years when they were searching for the Aboriginal.
Above and to the right the entrance from the inside.
