OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
KIMBERLEY - Page 37

1 September 2007, Saturday

The first day of spring and we are sweating like pigs in hot and humid Broome. Today was the first day of the Pearl Festival
which meant the Dragon Boat Races were on at Town Beach. Coming a little bit late meaning that we had to squeeze in at the
back. Four Dragon Boats fighting against each other on an approx. 200 m course. This is different from the other events we
have seen so far, the boats are all the same and all together 15 local teams started. Normally you would think that going
straight and fast would be the best way of winning the race, however some teams had more fun trying to sink the other boats
rather than heading for the finish line - or was it just misbehaviour of the guy at the rudder? After a few races we left, was o.k.
but nothing to spend more time for. At camp we waited for the sunset which we wanted to see at Cable Beach - driving onto it
this time. Just before we wanted to head off a guy came buy with questions again about the trailer. He bought one just a few
weeks ago and wanted to know how it works. This for some reason delayed our trip to the beach and I hurried packing up
the stuff we wanted to take. At the beach we were setting up the chairs and the drinks and for sure the camera. Click and I
took the first picture realising that I forgot the memory card in the computer - thanks mate for asking the question about the
trailer... Well, I still had the small camera with me and we took a few pictures. The sunset today was not as impressive as the
other days because the smoke was too strong covering the sun most of the last 20 min. Pictures below from the Dragon Boat
race and the sunset.
The four boats of the
Dragon Boat Race
Challenge.
The starting procedure...
The drum person at the top of the boat. Like in the good
old Egyptian days...
And of they go, quite funny which direction some of the
boats took.
Ready for the next heat...
It was hard to figure out if they just wanted to sink the
other boat or have no idea in which direction they are
heading.
In one of the first round heats all boats collided right
after the start - chaos.
In some heats the boats capsized - rescue was not far
away... this time two of them could not finish the race.
