Continuation of the Broome story...

28 August 2007, Tuesday

We really picked a very good time to come to Broome. We would have three days of the Staircase to the Moon. Another three
days to choose from to see the planes which were destroyed by the Japanese during WWII and countless days to see the
dinosaur prints. We would also be here for the Pearl Festival - we could not have picked a better time to come to Broome -
except that at the moment the weather is already turning towards being warmer and more humid and that means the camper
trailer is very wet inside out in the mornings - so we actually sleep with the heating on to keep it dry inside the camper.
Today we went to the Bird Observatory at Roebuck Bay which is about 25 km's from Broome. This is quite a nice place to see
bush and shore birds - no cages so - you have to walk and find them yourself - but easy done. This is also an area to really
appreciate Roebuck Bay with its beautiful colours and beaches - amazing - wait until you see the pictures. In the afternoon
we would go to Gantheaume Point to find the Dinosaur prints at low tide and back to Town Beach to see the eclipse of the
moon which is also due tonight. The dinosaur prints are quite hard to find, but with the help of another couple we actually
found them all. The way up and down so is quite interesting and challenging - however still a lot of people to compete with.
Arriving at Town Beach for the eclipse it was already full at the beach and we all thought it would be a nice setting.
Unfortunately it would not get dark enough for the rising of the moon, so we just spotted it when already higher up and a little
red - quite disappointing. Later, at the caravan park, you would see much better colours when it was completely covered by
the Earth and later you could see it coming out again from the eclipse - nice. Below and on the next pages are a lot of
pictures from birds and beaches around Roebuck Bay, dinosaur prints and the eclipse.

A great bower bird taking a bath - they have two areas
with bird bath positions and hideouts which can be
used to see the bush birds.
