OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
KIMBERLEY - Page 21

26 August 2007, Sunday

Today we drove from Fitzroy Crossing to Broome - only about 80 km/h to not put too much stress on the driveline. We also
made a few stops to make sure that nothing in the driveline would overheat - without knowing what problem we actually had.
We arrived relatively late at Broome - early afternoon - which is late for getting a camping spot in a caravan park. Yesterday
we called the Roebuck Caravan Park and asked if we could book a spot and they told us no,they do not take bookings, just
show up. This was the first caravan place we tried and they told us that they have a powered site for one night but not after
that - how about no f&%$#$ bookings... Some people up here in the Northern part are just useless... sorry not to offend
anybody but they sometimes either do not think very much when they tell you things or they just abuse the turists to the
max. and do not care to show it. Before heading to the overflow areas we wanted to try Cable Beach Caravan Park - not
being very hopeful. They immediately gave us a site to look at and decide if we want to take it - this is also a first !!! The site
was relatively small on a corner but enough for the week or so we wanted to stay. Build up and relax....
Below just a couple of Boab trees on the way from Fitzroy Crossing to Broome.

Today we just wanted to have a look around town and book the car in for checking. Minshull Mechanical Repairs was
suggested by the caravan park and the visitor centre for 4WD repairs and Warren is pretty helpful too. They checked the car
in the afternoon and ordered all the possible parts from Perth overnight - but would only charge me for what would actually
be needed. Very helpful guys - go and visit them in Broome if you have a problem. Besides the car we went around the city,
the port and town beach. Broome is relatively small, but a nice setting. Just a little bit too dirty when you get behind the
streets. A taxi driver the other day would also complain a lot about people throwing their trash around and this time we are
not only talking Abo's doing it. The Streeters Jetty was the old place for the Pearl Luggers to come in at high tide. Do not
forget that here you can have around 10 m of tide movement in 6 hours which is quite impressive and it can easily catch you
out. Some cars would be stucked on the beach in a couple of days because they went fishing and parked their trailers and
cars at the top of the beach not counting that we will have a very high tide above 9.0 m - they all sank up to the diffs and sills
into the sand. I don't know how they got them all out but according to one guy it was maybe up to 100 cars... he he he. Below
are the pictures of the day.
We will miss those trees - they are just so nice to look
at - they also get a red colour on the bark after a fire
which even looks better.
Two types of crabs - red one on the left and
grey/brownish on the right (half hidden).
All those red dots are crabs around the Streeters Jetty
at low tide.
Don't know the name of this crab, but
they look funny. They all escape to their
holes when you walk along the mud - just
need to wait a little for them to come out
again.
Streeters Jetty - out into the mangroves.
View from Town Beach over the mangroves and the
beautiful water of Broome - the colours in the next few
pages of the water can not really be described - put on
your polarising sunglasses and enjoy when you are
here.
Just a seagull at Town Beach - many
more birds to come tomorrow.
Setting at the Deep Sea Port in Broome
along the Jetty.
The Jetty of the Deep Sea Port - you can also walk along
the Jetty to the end and good fishing from here.
