OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
KIMBERLEY - Page 10

22 August 2007, Wednesday

Today was the time for the Northern part of the park. We first drove up to the Mini Palms Gorge walk early in the morning to
be on time for the Echidna Chasm at noon when the light falls into the end of the chasm. The Mini Palms was a very
interesting walk through a creek bed (pretty hard to walk on those pebbles) and a few narrow pathways through the special
rock formation called conglomerate. Almost looks like man-made stone with all those pebbles in the stone. The end of the
Mini Palm Gorge walk ends in a narrow gorge - but no palms at the end. Somebody was saying that they had a flood and that
all palms have been destroyed in the gorge. The Livistona Palms are very fragile and therefore only grow in the gorges and
on rock ledges which are sheltered from the wind and rain during the seasons. They do grow all over the place along the
walk and look quite fantastic when seen in front of the red rocks. Sometimes the light during the morning was not very good
to actually be able to tell the story with pictures - gotta see it yourself to believe the amazing colours. After that walk we went
to the Echidna Chasm and timed it just right to be at the end around noon when the light fell into the end of the walk. It is
amazing when you walk through the narrow path and the walls go up to 200 meters above your head. Some of the stones
wedged on top of you when you walk through it are scary. Again an amazing place to be. The North has its own character
compared to the South which is dominated by the Dom areas - which are the postcard pictures you always see and will see
from us tomorrow. At the end we visited the Walanginjdji Lookout and created some interesting panoramic shots of the 360
degree views. The end of the day we went down to the South again for the sunset - this time at a different spot close to the
Piccaninny Car Park again. Tomorrow we will be there again for the sunrise - he he he early morning...

And by the way, I promised before that I won't take more than 500 photos during one day - well we did it again and will do it
again tomorrow - this place is just so amazing that the camera just clicks all the time - I can not stop it - it has its own mind... :-)

Those palms are amazing and they grow in the creek bed and above in the rock ledges. On the right the conglomerate
rock which looks like man-made stuff.
Mini Palms Gorge at the end
(left and above) - we were alone
- how is that - not many tourists
today !!! On the right another
lonely palm again almost on the
top of the range in a little
shelter between the two rocks.
We also found a Double Barred Finch on the way back - cute little bird and hard to find and see.
