OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
BIRDSVILLE - COOBER PEDY - Page 1

3 July 2007, Tuesday

Craig and Tracy told us to stop at Mungerannie for one night and enjoy the hot pool they have from the artesian bore. Well
that was the plan until the trailer brakes did not work anymore after attaching it to the Jeep again. Back to Birdsville Auto and
having them checked revealed that both sides were cut at the drums, I guess the DIP being responsible for the shockies was
also responsible for that and I just did not realise because of the slow driving. We lost about 3 hours doing so and therefore
called Mungerannie Hotel and booked a room because we would arrive late and exhausted again.

4 July 2007, Wednesday

Today we had a quick run from Mungerannie Hotel to Maree. Before we left from Mungerannie we had a look at the Wetlands
around the Hotel and found a few birds. The World or better the Aussie Outback is very small - today we met the Parents of
Zach from the Jeep Club. In the middle of nowhere you not think that this happens, but it does all the time. The winds today
made the driving quite interesting and we also had to go through several small sandstorms. At the end we stayed again in a
cabin because the wind warning did not really support to put up the camper trailer for just one night. Maree is really not a
place to be... why? Because it feels like a Ghost-town with people wandering around. The official information centre could
not give us any information and until we found a friendly person took a while. So off we go again tomorrow and try to get to
Coober Pedy in one day - about 400 km's. Here are the photos from the day.
Enjoy the Birdsville track - well we actually did. It is more than a Highway in most places, some rough sections but they are ok compared
to other tracks we did so far. The sand dunes and vegetations are changing from section to section, but otherwise vegetation is very
little. No wonder this was a nightmare track to do in the early days, no shade except close to floodways and they are also rare. On the
right is the Mirra Mitta Bore which brings boiling water to the surface. One of many in the area.
The better part of the Birdsville track is made of sand and really smooth to drive. This is driving through the main
feature on the entire track - the hills at the Mungerannie Gap during the sunset. Just before we arrived at the
Mungerannie Hotel and had Dinner and a few drinks with some guys we saw from Cameron Corner to here.
The Birdsville track
sign at the Hotel and
the signs for the turn.

The artesian bore
pool - hot water can
be regulated -
unfortunately we did
not use it because it
was full when we
arrived with a big
tourist group.

The trucks were used
by Tom Kruse, the
Birdsville mailman.
We also bought the
movie today - The
Back of Beyond.
The Wetlands at the Mungerannie Hotel - nice to walk and
watch the birds. Some more pictures on the next page.
