BIRDSVILLE - COOBER PEDY - Page 2
4 July 2007, Wednesday
Continuation of the Wetlands at Mungerannie...
Lots of Birds in the Wetlands... really a nice place to stop and also Pam &
Phil will welcome you with good food and cold beer.
Old Mulga Store and
Homestead Ruins.
George and Mabel
Aiston had a store here
from 1924-53. On the
right the perfect
picture showing the
harsh environment we
are travelling through.
At Coopers Creek the World seems different when you see
the M.V. Tom Brennan on the land. This boat was used to
carry supplies across Cooper Creek when flooded. The
floodway is 5 km's wide and can take weeks to dry out.
Nowadays a ferry connection on private land will carry the
traffic if flooded.
The other two pictures are from the Clayton Camping Area
and the adjourning wetlands. This is an Outback Spa !!! The
place has hot showers and the spa both get the hot water
from the artesian bore. In the background of the left picture
you can already see the dust in the air. The wind was
amazing.
Lake Harry Ruins. One photo from the car because the wind
and dust storm (also seen in the background) was a little
too much for the eyes - maybe we should have taken the ski
goggles. Soon after, we saw about 6 eagles besides the
road eating a dead animal. The crow in the lower picture
was pretty brave trying to get something of the meat.
Finally in Maree - and soon gone again. Another truck from
Tom Kruse's mail run along the Birdsville Track. Marre was
once part of the Ghan going to Alice Springs, but closed in
1980 and the town did the same. Which one is better the old
Ghan train or OLISTJ - clearly mine !!! Almost forgot, lost a
pin from the swaybar disconnect - replacement fitted and
ready to head towards Coober Pedy tomorrow.
