Continuation of the Cape Range NP Story...
15 September 2007, Saturday
Today we wanted to drive to Coral Bay and stay for one night before continuing to Shark Bay. Therefore we did not get up at
5 am to drive 680 km's and left about 8.30 am towards Coral Bay. Arriving in Coral Bay we decided to actually head off
immediately and not stay for one night, Coral Bay itself is very nice and not as windy, at least not during the day, however the
amount of people in Coral Bay and that it is really just one street full of tour bureaus and caravan parks does not make it very
appealing. I thought about snorkeling and drive off, but at the end decided to not do it due to cold water and just too
difficult.... O.k. so what did we think about the Ningaloo Reef area? Well, maybe it was the wrong time of the year, it is
definitely worth a visit during April to July to see the Whale sharks and if you have not seen reefs before which are better.
Otherwise, we thought that the three nights we spend here was enough. The next stop would be Carnarvon, because
Denham would be a little to far for today. Arriving at Carnarvon we also were a little shocked about the "dead" town. Yes it
was Saturday, but where are all the people? Listening to the radio we heard about the Carnarvon races being on today - o.k.
here we go again. Same as in Wyndham, the town is absolutely deserted when the horse races are on. We booked into a
cabin at one of the caravan parks and went off to see the two main attractions of Carnarvon. The OTC Dish (remember the
Australian movie - The Dish?). Not much actually to see besides the Dish itself, hmmm not adding to the appeal of the place.
The next stop was the famous One Mile Jetty. You actually have to pay $4 to walk the one mile out to the jetty head - hmmm
another minus for Carnarvon. We got our exercise for the day doing the walk and back, but that was really it. We also saw
Pelican Point without Pelican's and went back to our cabin to get warm. The wind is quite chilly. Carnarvon, at least when the
races are on and it is windy is not really worth the visit. Below are a few pictures from today.

Other panoramics from today besides the Cape Range Roads. Lakeside and the Bird Hide at Mangrove Bay.

Coral Bay - a few impressions of the Bay and flowers around - by the way the wildflowers become more and more prevailing during the drive towards the Southern part of WA.
|
The OTC dish - you can walk up to the first ring and that is it, no other information about the dish or anything here? Did we miss something?

The beach in Carnarvon with the One Mile Jetty in the background.
|
The start of the walk towards the end of One Mile Jetty. A tram is also going along the Jetty, but is $7 instead of $4 for walking and it is not even much faster. We almost beat it on the way back.
