OUR BIG TRIP
MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA

WEST COAST - Page 1
12 September 2007, Wednesday
Today we started our journey along the West Coast of Australia. From Dampier we drove to Exmouth. We arrived in the
Whale Shark Capital of Australia late in the afternoon and booked in for three nights. We have a little bit wind and the
temperature has gone down quite a bit from the Kimberley and Pilbara. We will mainly snorkel the Ningaloo Reef during the
next couple of days before heading towards Shark Bay. No pictures from today.

Today was snorkeling day and we drove towards the Cape Range NP and the Ningaloo Reef. The first stop was the
snorkeling spot called Oyster Stacks. The wind was quite strong, however the current is not as bad as we expected. We both
snorkeled around the Oyster Stacks and saw lots of fish. We also tried the new Olympus camera and it works quite well. The
pictures have been adjusted in light level to show the real colours as you see them underwater when snorkeling. After Oyster
Stacks we went to Turquoise Bay, first the Drift Snorkel area which I did only and afterwards the Bay which I also did,
however the water was getting quite cool and shivering was the result after about 4 hours of being in the water all day. We
took lots of pictures with the new camera and my Canon including the underwater case we have. After the snorkeling
experience at the reef we went to the Lighthouse to see the sunset, however went home before because it was getting quite
cold and the view was not that spectacular. At the end, Was it as we expected it?, hmmm maybe not. The snorkeling areas
are great, but unfortunately we have seen better. We have been to many Islands of the Pacific and also the Great Barrier Reef
at a few places and this can not quite compare to what we have seen over the last few years. The best is still Palau !!! The reef
is very accessible, but this is really the only advantage for those who do not want to fly to any Islands or take a boat tour.
Pictures from today below.

Oyster Stacks (seen as the three dark spots sticking out of the water) - should we or not? Just checking the water, wind and swells.

Nice bay and not that full - a few people only.

Here are the underwater pictures from Oyster Stacks and Turquoise Bay. Enjoy and again, they have been slightly adjusted in levels to show the real colours.
