Continuation of Nourlangie and Billabong walks...

13 August 2007, Monday

Today we only went on the Ranger Uranium Mine Tour - which was not entirely what we thought it would be. We had a close
look from the outside to the Open Pit Mine section and drove around the complex inside and got the explanation on how
Uranium Oxide is made. However, no close-up or walking around the huge loaders or anything outside when we were in the
plant complex. However here are some pics from the tour.
Willy Wagtail - funny bird, more to be appreciated in
reality or video.
Magpie Goose
Rainbow Bee-Eater - new one we had not seen before.
Nourlangie Lookout and view onto Arnhem Escarpment - quite nice besides the haze in the background.
Escarpment without the tree - hmmm took a couple of pics on the left and right of the tree and they came together ok!!!
Anbangbang Billabong (not seen in this picture because this part is already dry) with Nourlangie Rock in the background.
The Ranger Uranium Open Pit Mine - the water at the
bottom is still from the Wet Season and is 20 m too high
to start mining the bottom of the pit - Real mining does
not start until about October.
Wearing a west, hardhat and safety
glasses - for what f&%#$ reason - to
stand outside of the open pit mine and
drive around the bus - what a joke !!!
Closer... Probably the most interesting thing we saw
besides the 2 men with space suits that you'll see later.
The Loaders are huge - this one according to the guide
is a 90 tonne carrier coming down the pit to load up.
