OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
TOP END - Page 9

1 August 2007, Wednesday

Today we wanted to see the Ghan leaving from Darwin on its journey to Alice Springs. So we drove to the Darwin station in
Berrimah - which is about 20 km's from the CBD. A very tiny station if you consider that the Ghan is arriving and leaving from
here. But they have buses driving up and down the Ghan to deliver the passengers to their wagon. Quite an impressive site,
see the pictures below. We also drove to a spot about another 10 km's down the road to see it coming across the Elizabeth
River. The light was not very good for the pictures, but posted some anyway.
3000 kw power to pull a long train all the way from
Darwin to Adelaide. $1800 for one-way trip in Gold Class.
The Ghan - stands for the Afghans
which brought their Camels to the
Red Centre of Australia and opened
it up for trading and travel.
Stupidly we were not allowed to cross the Yellow line
when we wanted to take this photo - anyway we have a
photo with the Ghan.
Without words...
General Motors everywhere...
Every carriage has its own sign - however one of them
still had a sign from the Overlander - hmmm that goes
from Melbourne to Adelaide?
Elizabeth River Crossing
The station - which one? Yes that small building is the station for the Ghan in Darwin.
