TOP END - Page 7
31 July 2007, Tuesday
Today we drove towards Kakadu NP along the Arnhem Hwy to see the Jumping Crocodiles on the Adelaide River Queen -
the original of the Adelaide River Crossing Cruises. On the way we stopped at Fogg Dam Reserve to see the Birds on the
wetlands. Here are the pictures from the Birds, Lilies and Crocs.
Still some Water Lilies left during the Dry Season.
Fogg Dam Reserve - a huge amount of Birds on the
wetlands. Magpie Goose on the right/.
Jabiru flying over the larger billabong - the only
Australian storch. All other birds are afraid of it...
Going for the fish in the billabong - so maybe no crocs
in that one.
The shear amount of Birds already is amazing during
the day - just imagine this place in the early morning or
in the evening in the late Dry Season, when the
waterholes are getting smaller
Birds of prey are also around in a huge number all
across the top end. Very hard to establish the kind of
bird, but most likely either a whistling kite or a black
shoulder kite.
Fishing seems to be going well in the billabong.
The lilies are really nice along the road, just staying a
little away from the waters edge - you never know about
crocs and as we all know they like Germans up at the
Top End.
Could not get a better picture - it tried to escape from
the car. Most likely a Black Whip Snake according to
colour and speed.
Those are the birds which can walk on the Lilie leaves -
looks like Jesus walking over water. I guess they had
their nest at this place.
This bird is called Australian Dexter.
Spoon like beak - name also starts with Spoon, but
forgot the rest.
Egret standing still to catch a fish
The first Crocodile seen in the wild. They line the
Adelaide River all along and come to the boat to
perform their jumps and get a nice pork chop.
