Today we had to say Good-Bye to Pemberton - which was not easy - due to the nice chalet and the beautiful forest. On our
way to Albany we stopped for a coffee again in Walpole and saw the good old CJ from Mike when driving off - good luck to
you guys for everything. Through Denmark we finally came to Albany. We did not think much about Albany, but it is really
nice and the surrounding coastline is fantastic. We booked into the Middleton Beach Caravan Park and what a lucky place -
the beach is full of shells and that is the only thing we did after setting up the trailer. Somebody told us before that Albany is
nice if you can stay out of the wind - which is basically impossible.... The weather was nice, but the wind can be quite cold.
Below a picture from the beach and collecting shells.

The two things we wanted to do in Albany was Whale World and have a look at the beaches and coastline around
Frenchman Bay, Two Peoples Bay and maybe Shelley Beach. Today the weather was fantastic and we decided to do Whale
World and Frenchman Bay. Whale World is situated at the former Cheynes Beach Whaling Station close to Frenchman Bay. It
was quite interesting to see how the whaling was actually done - not that we like whaling, but to see the factory and what was
actually done gives you a better insight. Please, move on to Southwest WA Page 24 if you do not like to see some of the
pictures we took at Whale World. The movies and stories shown at this place are fantastic and worth a visit. After that we
went along the coast and visited all the beaches and sights around Frenchman Bay - very nice scenery and the weather was
fantastic. At night, we went for dinner with Adrian and Jane. We met Adrian at the Jeep Muster and he is from Albany - nice to
talk to him and his girlfriend. At the end, after we almost were the last guests in the pub, the main street in Albany was empty
except for two nicely modified TJ's - great sight !!! Below are the pictures from today. Again move to Southwest WA Page 24 if
you do not like to see pictures of the former whaling station.

Middleton Beach and the peninsulas and islands surrounding Albany - great coastline.

Trust me Mary also collected them....
|
The flensing deck - this was the place where the blubber was removed from the whales before they were loaded up to the cutting-up deck and put into the cooker.
|
The Cheynes IV - the last whale chaser before the station closed in 1978.
|
This National Geographic Map is fantastic - it shows the main whale species and their areas of distribution around the world. It also shows the countries which did whaling in the 1970's. Mary was obviously shocked when she saw that Vigo was on the map as the Spanish whaling port !!!! How about that?
|
The invention of the harpoon with an explosive head made whaling much quicker and also a quicker death for the whale - as if that would make a big difference - don't get us wrong we love whales and do not want to see them hurt at any stage.
|
Sperm whales towed home after the end of the day. After the humpbacks were hunted almost to extinction they turned on Sperm Whales - Moby Dick...
|
On board of the Cheynes IV - some people must have used the toilets - stupid tourists.....
We found the cabin of the Chief Engineer - very rustic interior - but a desk to do the work. All an engineer needs to be happy - he he he
