OUR BIG TRIP
MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA

SOUTHWEST WA - Page 7
07 October 2007, Sunday
Today we packed up slowly and went on from Dunsborough to Margaret River, the main centre in the Southwest. Margaret
River is known for fantastic wine and surf, we do not surf, so Wine it has to be for the next few days, well, we will do the
caves too. Today was just setting up and we actually got an Ensuite site, which was quite good because the next days it
would rain most of the time, from drizzle to real heavy showers. We had a quick look through the town and it really looks nice
and the surroundings in the forest are just fantastic. It reminds us so much of the Vic High Country and our favourite place
Marysville. Pemberton will even be better, but that is still to come. We also booked a full day wine tour for Tuesday, to make
sure do not get in trouble driving when having the wine tasting. No pictures from today.
08 October 2007, Monday
Today was caves day, we went to Lake and Mammoth Cave close to Margaret River. Lake Cave has a 30 minute tour which
includes more than 300 steps either way - quite strenuous. The cave itself is very beautiful with a formation they call the
suspended table. I did have my tripod with me and the guide actually let me use it. But unfortunately the tour was too short to
get real good pictures. Afterwards we went to Mammoth Cave and this is a self-guided walk with an audio tour. The cave is
mainly known for the bones found from prehistoric mammals up to possums from today - the formations are not as beautiful
as Lake cave. Jewel cave would follow in a couple of days. After Mammoth cave we did the Karri walk around the cave and
saw some beautiful wildflowers which would continue for at least the next week. After the caves and wildflowers, we drove
along the coast and some forest drives before stopping at The Point. We collected shells and this little beach and rock area
was just fantastic for "shelling" - he he he however better to come. So here are the pictures from today.

Lake Cave entrance - about 300 steps down, but you also have to come up the same way. Unfortunately, the tour was a little full and not enough time to really enjoy the fantastic features of the cave.

Below the suspended table above the water - which really looks fantastic. The mirror effects are very nice along the cave.
|
More pictures from the suspended table and some nice ceiling formations not really going by gravity.

One of the first orchids we saw outside of Mammoth Cave - on the right the entrance to Mammoth Cave.
