Continuation of the Busselton Jetty UWO story...
06 October 2007, Saturday
Today we did the whale tour in Dunsborough. I convinced Mary to do it besides her normally getting sea-sick. We expected a
Jetty to board the boat but the pick-up was from the beach and we were on the first boat load to the main catamaran. The
catamaran was quite shaky and we were not allowed to move out of the cabin until everybody was on board. We thought that
this would already be the end of the tour for Mary and the next 3 hours would be quite bad. Luckily Mary survived the first 30
minutes and the rest of the tour was o.k. besides the sea being a little rough. Shortly after, we moved out to the edge of the
bay we saw a group of 5-6 humpback whales and that was just fantastic. The pictures below are not really giving the
impression you have when seeing those majestic animals close to the boat. They showed us nicely their tails and also
breached a little bit further away from the boat. Once two whales came out of the water simultaneously and breached, that
was just magic - unfortunately no good photos from the breaching because you just can not get the camera out quickly
enough to capture it. After a while, the skipper went away from the group of whales and was looking for a mother and calf
closer to the shore, which was not very good, we did not see another whale for the last hour of the tour - stupid guy moving
away from that group which just got a little bit familiar with our boat. We still can recommend the tour, you will see whales for
sure during the season. In the afternoon, we went to the first cave (three more to come) - Ngilgi Cave. The cave was nice and
it was a self-guided tour and you could spend as much time in the cave as you wanted - therefore lots of photos.
Unfortunately, you are not allowed to use a tri-pod, so the fantastic pictures are not possible. The day was very nice with the
whales and the first cave... pictures from today below.

The Jetty and surroundings during the approaching sunset. Below are two panoramics from the Jetty.

The boat for the tour - a catamaran which was still quite shaky out on the bay.

The first whale ... Humpback
|
They nicely showed us their tails and one of them was very white on the side - Did we find Moby Dick??? No, that was a Sperm whale as we would learn later.
|
More and more tails... below on the left the aftermath of a huge breaching of one of the humpbacks. You can still see the tail in the white splash on the right edge. Later the whales came closer to the boat...
