OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
SOUTHWEST WA - Page 1

04 October 2007, Thursday

Today we drove to Dunsborough after packing up and saying Good-Bye to Rodge and family. It was great to stay with them
and hope we stay in contact. Maybe we see you guys one day in Spain or back in Oz. First, we drove down the coast to
Mandurah, a popular Holiday Resort for the Perth population. We went to Cicerello's for lunch because we did not go in Freo.
The Chili Mussels and fish & chips were good, the clam chowder does not reach the US quality - anyway worth a lunch or
Dinner either in Mandurah or Freo. From here, we went straight for Dunsborough and set-up camp. The camping was
surprisingly empty during the school holidays. The weather was not that great and the mud has just dried out - maybe that
was the reason. Also the mosquitos are quite large here and they come in millions during dusk and dawn, however for some
reason we have not been bitten that much. During the next few days we will have a look at Busselton, do a Whale tour and
start our cave tour with the Ngilgi Cave. No pictures from today.

First, we went to the Busselton Jetty to book the tour of the Underwater Observatory (UWO). We could not get any tour until
the afternoon and decided to drive to Cape Naturaliste before seeing the UWO. We were a little disappointed by the Cape and
Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is quite far inland on top of the hill and you can not really reach the Cape, so we only went to the
Whale Lookout and actually saw something which resembled a Whale - we think. After that, we drove back to the Jetty and
enjoyed the UWO tour. Quite nice to see what colourful underwater world you have in the far southwest of WA. I did not think
that the water would be that nice, obviously this time of the year the snorkeling would not be very viable due to the cold
water. The Busselton Jetty is almost 2 kms long and the longest wooden Jetty in Australia and lots of fishing is going on
along the jetty. When we walked back from the UWO most of them had caught some cuttlefish or better squid rings for
dinner. When driving back to Busselton from Dunsborough the clouds of mosquitos from the saltwater marshland behind
the coast was just amazing. The car was covered in smashed mosquitos all over the front. Here are the pictures from today.
Part of an old jetty at Busselton before we headed out
to the Cape.
Another shot of the Lighthouse with the Ozzi flag.
And we did see something,
not sure if it was a Southern
Right or Humpback Whale,
but it did move quite slowly
and funny movements - so
probably a Southern Right.
The Whale Lookout at the Cape Naturaliste.
The Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse.
The wildflowers in the area are getting more and more,
you will see many more pictures in the next couple of
weeks of our trip.
The Busselton Jetty - as said almost 2
kms of Jetty before you get to the UWO.
Below the last part of the Jetty which
was separated to the rest of it by a fire a
few years back. The other picture
shows the UWO entrance.
Those two pictures just give you an idea on
how colourful the underwater world around
the Jetty is. You walk down in a tank and have
a few viewing windows and a tour guide
explaining the different fishes and corals.
Nice tour. More on the next page.
