OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
KIMBERLEY - Page 49

6 September 2007, Thursday

After Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, we went today to Silent Grove and Bell Gorge which is about 100 km's further down
on the Gibb River Road and 30 km's off to the side. Again, the Gibb Rived Road is not really that big adventure anymore and
the road is quite good with patches made out of bitumen especially at the jump-ups through the ranges. However, the
scenery is quite nice and this is when I started to regret that we could not do the whole trip across. Well, some other people
told us that we saw the best part of the Gibb River Road and that after Bell Gorge and maybe Manning Gorge not much to see
until you hit the Pentecoast River on the other side, sure not forgetting Mitchell Falls - but we never planned to take the car up
to the plateau. We arrived at the turn-off and again the road deteriorated a little towards silent grove and the last 10 km's to
Bell Gorge is more like a track. The start of the walk is quite boring and you think - did I really drive 130 km's to see this... but
when you actually come to the gorge and falls, it is awesome - just too many cars and people. We enjoyed the area and I
walked down into the gorge and also had a swim besides that my stuff was in the trailer - so had to jump in as is and dry
afterwards - it was worth it. Below, lots of pictures of the gorge area - enjoy.
The scenery on the way to Bell Gorge along the Gibb River
road - a mixture of ranges, boab trees and nice vegetation -
magnificent. Below, panoramics of the roadside along the
western part of the Gibb River Road and along the King
Leopold Ranges.
The view when you enter the gorge area is fantastic - either the upper pool on the right or the falls and the lower
pools on the left - awesome.

the lower pool and the
waterfall.
