Continuation of the second staircase to the moon...

31 August 2007, Friday

Today I got up at 5.20 am to get out to see the planes which were destroyed by the Japanese during WWII. You can only see
them during a minus tide and we had -0.36m today. The low tide would be approx. at 6.30 am, so you needed to be at town
beach around 5.45-6.00 am to start the walk out - which looked like at least 1 km through and on top of the mud plain. Just
when I started walking across the mud the sun rise dabove the horiazon and actually created a staircase to the sun as can be
seen in the pictures - very nice. The people who either drank through the night to be here or got up early as me would be a
little bit annoying - but at the end I got some 20 min. alone around one of the planes which was quite good. However, when
you se the postcard people sell in Broome and see the planes yourself you must think that this picture was talen about 1960 -
when the planes were in quite good shape and more exposed compared to today. Mary was just getting up and having
coffee when I came back and after breaky we would go to Cable Beach to enjoy the first real beach day of our trip. It was not
as full as we thought and the waves were quite nice. In the afternoon we went to the opening ceremony of the Pearl Festival
or better Shinju Matsuri as it is knwon here in Broome. Again it was not as busy as we thought. This year the festival was
dedicated to the Return of the Pearl Legends. They invited old Pearl Divers from Malaysia, Japan and other countries back to
Broome and it was quite an emotional gathering of people. The oldest man was 100 years and he still lives in Broome ith his
family. At night we stopped at the Mangrove Hotel to see the last day of the staircase to the moon, however this time it was
not very good. Three reasons - first and foremost the veranda is made out of wood, whenever somebody moves the tripod
and camera moves - not good !!! Secondly the smoke was too strong and the intensity of the moonlight not strong enough to
create a big and nice staircase - which also leads to the last point that some other people said that the last day of the
staircase is always the worst - maybe that was bad in addition to the smoke. They also turned on the lights a little too early
again at the hotel to continue the life music. Well, as we said before - go to the earth jetty at the town beach - be there at least
1.5 hours before the moon rises and enjoy the best view. Pictures below of the days events.
On the right a plane coming into Broome airport - the
light on top is the plane and the reflections below on
the mud plains.

Below a panoramic of the Deep Sea Port jetty and the
boats out at sea.
Now - enjoy the creation of the staircase from the best viewpoint in town. The conditions were quite good - not much smoke and nobody
shaking on the veranda as we will experience tomorrow at the Mangrove Hotel. - no comments just pictures in sequence - you only have
about 20 min. to take the pictures and most of them take between 8-30 sec. exposure to make them look real.
Again - all of the pictures will be shown later as cropped items for comparison reasons and enjoyment of people
who like this scenery.
Just before the sun came up...
The start of the walk towards the planes - you can just
about see the group of people and planes on the left
hand side of the horizon.
Lots of people are already on their way out to the
planes. Some of them shouldn't be allowed due to their
alcohol levels - at the end they will enjoy some wet
clothing while falling into the mud... he he he
The staircase to the sun at sunrise - thanks for the bird flyin by at the same
time.
