OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
KIMBERLEY - Page 19

24 August 2007, Friday

Instead of going back towards Kununurra and heading down the Gibb River Road we started our way to Fitzroy Crossing.
The way back from the camping spot to the Hwy was taken very slowly and in 2WD, to ease the pain on the front axle. From
the Hwy entrance to Halls Creek it was about 100 km's and this time we drove about 110 km/h and continued like that to
Fitzroy Crossing. We new that we would have a hard time to get a camping spot, so we choose immediately the Crossing Inn
instead of the resort at the river. The Crossing Inn is the oldest pub in the Kimberley region and full of Abo's drinking their
money away. The caravan spot is o.k. to stay for a couple of days. That is what we wanted to do and see Geikie Gorge the
following day. At the end of the day we also realised that now also the rear axle had started leaking around the differential
and axle seal. This meant that we would need to change both front and rear axle seals in Broome and hope that not more is
damaged. Today we had no pictures but a long drive of 2 hours from the Bungles to the Hwy and another 400 km's to Fitzroy
Crossing.

25 August 2007, Saturday

Today it was Geikie Gorge day. 18 km's on a sealed road from Fitzroy Crossing. In the morning our neighbours found a green
tree frog and Mary was playing with him for a little bit - we also experienced a Bower bird trying to impress a female
companion in front of his bower - that was quite funny. Before we headed out we went to the old crossing at the river and the
old township. The Visitor Centre told us that a tourist tried to cross the river next to the bridge just to get the 4WD feeling
happening and almost lost the car in the quicksand. Well, keep to the bridge - maybe one less Britz Troopie to battle with on
the road. After taking a couple of pics we went to Geikie Gorge expecting quite a big scenery. At the end we were both
disappointed from the walk and we can not imagine that the boat tour along the river will be better. We saved the day and
extended our walk down the river to the sandbank and I went across the river to the sandbank which was quite interesting.
Before we walked along the river to maybe see Freshwater Crocs, however none whatsoever - we heard a couple ruching
into the water, but no picture. We went back to the camping early to pack up for the trip to Broome tomorrow. Knowing that it
would take approx. 5 hours we were not very hopeful to get a good camping spot in Broome. Below are the pictures of the
day.
Bower Bird inside his Bower after running around like
crazy to attract a female...
Doesn't he look cute...
Green Tree Frog and Mary actually touched it and was
holding it. It walks along your arm - funny little creature.
The female went away, so I guess some more clean-up
work is required...
Nice size comparison - and all in 4WD - great !!!
This is what we take next time we go around Oz - Much
bigger and more comfort.
Old township - Post Office building.
Old Fitzroy Crossing - quicksand on
either side - do not try it out...
Geikie Gorge along the Fitzroy River - nice but not
impressive as many say...
Walking along the river (which is
quite hard due to the soft sand) to
spot a freshwater croc was not
successful.
The reef can be seen on both sides of the river. 350
Mill. years old.
This sort of sandbank is fully flooded during the wet -
the floods they have had here are quite high.
