OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
KIMBERLEY - Page 14

23 August 2007, Thursday

This time we headed down to the South area to see the dom area or bee hives or Piccaninny Creek area - whatever you want
to call it - it is just amazing - awesome - breathtaking - f&%#$% unbelievable.

OK enough happiness, you still have to walk it and that can take some time - up to one week if you go up Piccaninny Gorge
and explore all areas. We choose to stay on the day walks and include the sunrise - which meant getting up at 4.15 am - yes
that early !!! The sunrise starts around 5.00 am with the sun coming above the horizon around 6.00 am. At the beginning the
sunrise is quite boring, but when the sun actually hits the doms, it is quite amazing for about 2 min., yes getting up that early
for two minutes can be quite painful, however we both agreed that it was worth the effort. After that we had breaky at the car
park before heading out for the Dom Walk, Piccaninny Creek and Lookout and at the end the highlight - the Cathedral Gorge.
All of them quite good and different - I think you could easily spend a week in this place and see all areas at different times of
the day to really appreciate the colours and take in the photograph opportunity. In the afternoon, we were quite tired and
went back to camp to pack up for an early departure. I had to try the solar shower we have and enjoyed a shower in the open.
We also discovered today an oil leak at the front axle hub - well we just serviced the car, so what happened? Either too much
oil or the wrong one - or just a worn seal and coincidence that it happened just after the service and using 4WD all the time in
the park? Based on that, we decided to change our itinerary and head directly over to Broome without doing the Gibb River
Rd yet. Back to Kununurra would have meant that we miss the Staircase to the Moon in Broome and maybe have to stay over
the weekend without having parts handy for doing the service. We can still do the Gibb River Rd from Broome - it just means
more mileage. The Staircase only happens between May and October and only 2-3 days a month, so we thought this was
better than going down the Gibb River Rd with a maybe broken vehicle or staying again in Kununurra for a few days before it
is fixed - the vehicle should make it to Broome with that problem. This way, we also can take in the Geikie Gorge in Fitzroy
Crossing.

We also have to say that today we had too many people (mainly tours) around to really enjoy it all the way. Still today we both
decided that this is the best place we have been so far, even Mary said "This is the first 4WD trek which is worthwhile doing
to see an area" and that means quite a lot !!! Now enjoy the many pictures including panoramics we took today.
The first lot of
pictures is from the
sunrise - taken
between 5.15 and 6.15
am - Enjoy without
comment the
changing colours.
