OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
EYRE PENINSULA - Page 1

23 October 2007, Tuesday

We still can not believe that we actually made it across the Nullarbor in just two days - well it is only just over 1400 km's but
still the car went very well and therefore, we slept in today having a Motel room. We started our way towards Port Lincoln
down the Eyre Peninsula. The last few days we had rain on and off which we refer to as isolated showers. This is how today
started out and it would get worse. The rain and wind became worse during the day when we drove towards Streaky Bay. On
ABC radio warnings further to the East and North came out for severe thunderstorms, hail and flooding which would extend
later during the day to the East part of the Eyre Peninsula. The weather on the west coast of the peninsula was not much
better the isolated showers turned into real showers and the wind was blowing harder than ever and it was hard to keep the
3.5 tonne monster truck and trailer on the road. After passing through Streaky Bay we turned towards Point Labatt to see the
Sea Lion colony. Maybe that was not such a great idea when we realised that the 50 km's would be dirt gravel road during
rain. Luckily it was not very slippery but it would leave the car and trailer about 50 kg heavier at the end of the day from the
sand and gravel stuck to it - even the rain later in the day could not wash it off. The sea lions where nice but the rain and wind
made it still not very enjoyable. We drove off after a few minutes and after a short coffee stop at Port Kenny and having a
quick look at Venus Bay we arrived in Elliston. We booked immediately into a cabin at the Waterloo Tourist Park - it was to
windy and rainy to build up the trailer without probably damaging it. Very nice cabin for a very reasonable price - stay here if
you come to Elliston - also the campsite is nice and close to the beach. We bought local prawns and had a feast for dinner -
yummy. Some pictures from a miserable and rainy day - unfortunately - otherwise the coast is really nice.

Today we drove from Elliston to Port Lincoln, the weather was a little better, at least no rain for most of the day. First, we did
the Great Ocean Drive in Elliston which includes some sculptures on top of the cliffs and a beach with some shells - he he he.
After that we drove down to Locks Well Beach, but did not go down the 300 steps to the beach. For lunch, we stopped at the
Sheringa Roadhouse - a small place but the food was good. From here we went to the beach on a newly graded road -
yesterday's water almost made it impassable and some of the guys staying at the beach had to extend for another day and
wait for the grader to make the road drivable again. The beach at Sheringa is really nice and the surf beach a little further was
even better - many shells. From here we drove to Port Lincoln and tried to book again into a cabin. The weather here at the
southern tip of the Eyre Peninsula is not very good and rain is again on the horizon. Unfortunately, no cabins available and
we finally stayed in the trailer hoping the weather would not turn too bad - let's hope. Below are a few pictures.
Venus Bay - short break in the rain - further South it
would be much worse.
Point Labatt and
the Sea Lions -Very
bad weather - the
wind would almost
blow the camera
out of your hands.
Dirty and muddy - that was just after half of the
dirt road - it would get worse.
Blue Tongue on the way
back to the Hwy from
Point Labatt - it did not
like the camera very
much. They also call it
Sleepy Lizard or
Shinkleback.
Sculptures on the cliffs.
