OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
ESPERANCE TO CEDUNA - Page 7

22 October 2007, Monday

The plan today was to drive to Eucla and maybe stay for another night and explore the dunes at Eucla despite knowing that
the Cops in Eucla do not like Jeeps and even less modified 4WD's. We also heard some stories from the truckies on the
Nullarbor about Eucla which were not very encouraging to stay in this spot. We will see. We headed off at around 9 am
because we only had about 200 km's to go today. The weather was not very good and after some overnight rain we just had
a small break of dry weather for packing up and the rain started again when we started our way. The rain was on and off for
the whole day and would ultimately determine our progress. Soon we arrived in Eucla and decided not to stay and just stop
for a snack and look at the Old Telegrapoh Station at the Dunes. The building has fallen apart and is now being swallowed by
the dunes - nice spot, but the weather was not very inviting in "Sunny Eucla" - that is what all the signs said around the
place. Luckily, we did not meet the local cops and went off to at least the Nullarbor Roadhouse which is another 200 km's.
Soon after Eucla, you drive over the border to SA and we got rid off all vegies and fruit - even that you do not have to until
Ceduna. Between the border and the roadhouse we stopped at almost all picture opportunities along the Great Australian
Bight to take in the cliffs and beaches. Great scenery, but a little too much wind and rain during the day. This drove us further
and further towards the Nullarbor Roadhouse. Finally, we arrived at the roadhouse and decided immediately to drive
onwards to Ceduna, which was another 300 km's - even if it would be slightly into the dark hours of the day. Just after the
roadhouse we turned towards the Head of the Bight which is very well know for its whales and scenery. Unfortunately, the
whale season is almost over and the only whale in the bay was quite a long way off, so that we could not even spot him. The
rain was coming in again and we soon had to go again. The $10 per person is quite expensive for out of season, but I guess
very appropriate during the season when you see many whales from the platforms. Now, we were on the home straight to
Ceduna and the car went that well that even the speed limit could not stop us - hmmmm we did slow down slightly when it
rained again to make sure we do get to Ceduna. We arrived at around 7 pm in Ceduna in the dark and booked into a Motel
due to the rain and wind. The room was not bad but the dinner in the place was a little bit expensive. I just could not
withstand the urge to have a German Wheat Beer - for an outrages price of $12 - bastard - but it was great !!! Below are the
pictures from the scenic drive along the Great Australian Bight.
The Eyre monument
and the view of the
dunes at the beach
of Eucla.
The dunes and the road to the Old Telegraph Station at
Eucla.
Now it is clear
what we take
the next time
we go around
Oz - OKA and
Houseboat -
great
combination !!!
The famous sign at
Eucla - only 2000 km's
to Melbourne - almost
home - he he he. Just
that we are taking a few
detours before anyway.
The Great Australian Bight - great
cliffs and beaches.... just the
weather....
Nice signs - however those bastards know use special tools to
mount them..... not that we tried to take one..... no no no.

On the right the Head of the Bight - Cliff views and above (see the
rainbow?) and below the real Head of the Bight beach area - one
of the main breeding grounds for the Southern Right Whale.
The Old
Telegraph
Station at
Eucla.
The rain is coming in and we are gone....
