Kings Canyon Rim Walk pictures continued...
12 July 2007, Thursday
Today we drove from Kings Canyon to Palm Valley using the Mereenie Loop Road instead of Boggy Hole Track. You have to
pay to use it, just $2.20 but the road is not really maintained for the portion you have to pay for. It goes through Aboriginal
Territory and therefore you have to pay and are not allowed to even stop besides the road - a little stupid for our
understanding. The corrugations did also some work on the car again. First I realised that one of the front driving lights had
lost its nut and was just hanging by its wire. Duct tape can fix anything, so did that. At the same time I also realised that the
one stud was missing from the rear carrier. Being the carrier for the tyre, water jerry can and also the tow bar for the trailer
that worried us a little. I decided to check all bolts and tighten them driving a little slower until we get to Hermannsburg. At
Hermannsburg the picture was still the same for the rear carrier, so we decided to do nothing yet and drive down to Palm
Valley Camping Ground. At that time I was still very upset at those people in Kings Creek Station telling us that the Mereenie
Loop Rd is the much better way than the Boggy Hole Track. Obviously they did not know that we do have significant 4WD
experience and a well set-up[ vehicle to do it, even with a trailer. I decided to never listen to Tourist idiots again. On the way
we collected again some firewood. Without a chainsaw in the travel package I needed to cut down a dead tree with the big
axe. Well after some work it actually gave in. Now fully prepared we arrived at Palm Valley Campground and found ourselves
with two other Tambo Campers in the same area. In the middle of nowhere and you just can not escape. However, this is
more like bush camping, even that they actually provide solar powered showers and toilets for your usage. We had a nice fire
with some other people and exchanged life stories which was quite interesting. Before all that I put a strap around the rear
carrier to support it at the rear chassis crossmember. This will show later was the best idea of the day. Here are just a couple
of pictures from the camping spot.

Early Birds are on the way at about 8 am towards Palm Valley. The last 4 km's are the first 4WD territory we enter. It is slow
going, but easy 4WD. Palm Valley is obviously known for its Red Cabbage Palms which only survived in this gully in Central
Australia from many millions of years ago. The next cousin is about 850 km's up into Queensland. Quite an interesting place
to see, however the sun was just coming out and providing some light for reasonable pictures. We got up that early because
we wanted to drive to Alice later and find a good camping spot before everybody hits the Red Centre for the Camel Cup the
next day. Here are some pictures from the Palm Valley walk.
