OUR BIG TRIP

MARY & OLI GOING AROUND AUSTRALIA
CAMERON CORNER - INNAMINCKA - Page 1

29 June 2007, Friday

After having some breaky at Cameron Corner Store we went off to Innamincka. We headed towards Merty Merty Station and
wanted to take the Strzelecki Track as this was the only open way people told us. However, we took the first turn to
Innamincka and the track deteriorated quite significantly and lots of water with "chicken" tracks around it. At the Innamincka
Hotel we found out that we actually took the Old Strzelecki Track instead of the new one - well a short-cut and more scenic.
Here are some pictures from the store and the way.

After arriving at Innamincka and again booking in for a room at the Hotel we drove out to see the Dig Tree. I know why do
they have a trailer with them when they stay in Hotel's all the time? Well the weather looked bad, tired, getting up again at 6
am to get to Birdsville tomorrow - so decision was easy again. Park the trailer and check in and have proper Dinner. Dig Tree
- long story short. Burke and Wills tried to reach the Gulf from Melbourne, returned without seeing the Gulf (just stopped
short) to this tree and died shortly after without having found supplies - that was in 1861. Dig from digging, food should have
been buried below the tree, but nobody found it. We also went to Burke's grave afterwards and because of the time saw an
amazing sunset due to the clouds. The funny thin was that at the Dig Tree we met the old guy taking care of the site and he
showed us old drawings from the guy who did the face of Burke on the tree and told us the whole story. He could have gone
on for ages and it was quite interesting, but unfortunately we wanted to see the tree during daylight.
Cameron Corner Store - nice people - stop here and have some food and spend some money. They are here for people
like us, so please support them. MJOC members - I left a business card here, so maybe we get new members... well
maybe not.
The way out of Cameron Corner towards Merty Merty, Mombaa Gas Fields and finally towards Innamincka. We really do
not know how that bus came about, but obviously the trip to here was its last.
What the hell is he doing now - lets
keep moving - those are just some
more birds we have seen all along

The Burke and Wills
Bridge on the way to
the Dig Tree. By the
way it is about 145
km's to the Dig Tree
and back. Would you
do that to see a tree
back in Melbourne?

The face of Burke was
done in 1898.
