Continuation of the Oodnadatta Track...

6 July 2007, Friday

We are staying at least 4 days in Coober Pedy to have a look around and enjoy the little touristy place. At arrival we realised
that we are now entering the touristy part of our travel. One of the caravan parks was booked out and the next day we even
heard that Kings Canyon is booked out for a couple of days next week. Well we are now travelling on the tourist path
everybody else is taking. Let's see how we can escape that a little. The other not so good thing is that we are back into cold
country. At night it goes down again to 2-5 deg C and that will last at least until we are North of Alice Springs. O.k. back into
Coober Pedy, we tried to look around town a little bit today and have a look at the famous Opal stuff. The pictures below tell
the story of the first day at Coober Pedy.
The next mound spring is
called the Bubbler, the water
just bubbles up from the
bottom of the little lake and
flows into the surrounding
wetlands. Strange site in the
middle of the desert.
The William Creek Hotel. Thousands of business cards, pictures, clothing and ID cards are pinned to the wall. I put a MJOC
card on the wall, lets see if we get new members.
From here the Oodnadatta Track continues to
Oodnadatta, however we turned off towards Coober
Pedy and the scenery changed first to red sand dune
country and later to a gibber plain without any
vegetation. Again a harsh environment in the summer
when stupid tourists (especially from Germany and the
rest of Europe) travel this county. Now it is actually
quite cold with the prevailing winds we still have.
This is the overview of the town from the Big Winch
Lookout. It does not look like 3500-5000 people, but that
is because most of them live underground.
I am pretty sure that those signs were posted due to German and Japanese
Tourists coming to Coober Pedy. Just behind the sign you have a drop off of
about 10 m and just to make sure they understand why they are here - take
the photos here !!! At the same place you also find sculptures or better art,
well your judgement is probably close to mine - that figure represents Coober
Pedy quite well....

Next up we went to the Desert Cave Hotel and asked for a
room for Sunday night. We wanted at least to stay one night
underground to see how that is. Would you book one of
those? Just kidding, that was in the old days for the miners,
I believe our room will be nicer.
